1. FOR THE HISTORY BUFF. The town is dotted with buildings and monuments dedicated to war history. Highlights include Monument Terrace, which honors fallen soldiers from the Civil War to present day, and Old City Cemetery, where more than 20,000 confederate soldiers are buried.

2. RECREATION FOR RETIREES. Lynchburg’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a 50-Plus Program featuring a full schedule of activities for seniors, such as ceramics and dancing classes, trips and health and wellness programs.

3. MANY WAYS TO PLAY. There are plenty of opportunities to stay busy, from shopping the downtown farmers market and antiques shops to hiking or biking in nearby parks and trails. The revitalized downtown also has boat ramps on the James River, making it easy for canoers and kayakers to take to the waters.
