1. IT’S PLAY TIME. The official state theater of Virginia, Abingdon’s Barter Theatre has been entertaining folks since 1933, when anyone with something to “barter” could attend a performance. Open year-round, the theater features productions ranging from comedy to drama.

2. HISTORY LESSON. A stroll through the town’s historic district takes you back in time as 18th- and 19th-century buildings showcase architectural styles of the past. Notable sites include The Martha Washington Inn, the Virginia House and the Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum.

3. OUTDOOR REVELRY. Nature enthusiasts have plenty to choose from for exploring the great outdoors. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area boasts great spots for camping, fishing and hiking. The Virginia Creeper and Appalachian trails run through the area.
